45’ Norman Wright Cruiser
Client Brief:
This installation required a silent energy supply and management system upgrade to be completed on a high quality but older luxury timber day cruiser. The vessel’s aged AGM batteries were due for replacement anyway, and the undersize inverter and lack of proper battery monitoring further compounded the owner’s complaints of lack of power during extended anchoring sessions. The vessel has also received upgrades such as an induction cooktop and air conditioning which were previously unable to be run without generator supply.
It was of utmost importance to prolong the amount of ‘silent running’ time available without compromising on available AC and DC power supply between generator run intervals. In addition, the high-powered charger and lithium-ion battery bank now maximises use of the generator whilst it is running, allowing rapid recharging from just 20% remaining capacity to 100% in under 4 hours.
Challenges:
Small spaces for housing the electrical equipment meant that choosing energy dense and compact Victron lithium batteries was a must.
Vessel is a 12V dc setup, however high capacity AC supply was desired for induction cooking and air conditioning via Victron 12V 5kw inverter charger.
The vessel is high performance and extremely neatly wired. The physical mounting neatness and robustness of the installation was very important to ensure reliability and a superior finish in keeping with the vessel.
Multiple supplies had to be managed automatically and remote monitoring provided via onboard Starlink satellite internet service. The vessel had a small solar array on the roof, an 11kw diesel generator, Shore power connection and x2 main engine alternators as possible charge sources to be handled by the installed energy system.
