Client Brief:
This installation required a silent energy supply and management system to be installed to complement the existing, proven setup of x2 diesel generators running 100% of the time when the vessel is away from the dock.
Due to the extreme amount of power hungry luxury equipment and onboard systems installed on vessels this size, it is common operational practice to rely on a large AC generator which is run all day and night.
This impeccably maintained 17-year-old vessel didn’t have any reported power supply issues; however, the energy supply still needed to run the air conditioning and all other vessel systems, including at rest stabilisers, powered up and running.
The owner disliked the sound of the generator running all night so it was of utmost importance to prolong the amount of ‘silent running’ time available without compromising available AC and DC power supply between generator run intervals.
Challenges:
The main challenge of this installation was the extreme power demands to be met with stored energy from a battery bank and requiring conversion to 3-phase 415V supply to be used onboard in place of generator supply.
Secondary challenges were integrating the new power supply with the existing electrical system and management screens around the vessel, which were high-tech ahead of their time and able to be customized to suit the requirements integrating battery and inverter supply.
Managing generator load during recharging periods was also a consideration as the installed array of high powered Victron inverter chargers were capable of drawing more power and putting it back into the battery bank than the generator could cope with. Suitable programming logic had to be employed to automatically ensure the generators were not overloaded during recharge time but still utilized as much as possible minimizing charge times and fuel usage.
